What to expect:

Porgies or Scup are a small silver pan fish. Porgies were once frowned upon by some people. Do not let myth of them being "bony" fool you. They have no more bones than any other fish. Once they are expertly filleted by the Osprey's mates and pin bones simply removed, they are ready to bread up and fry! They are a white meat fish that has a natural sweet taste to them. Often compared to a tilapia fillet, but unlike tilapia, the ones we catch aren't farm raised and are very healthy for your family to eat! If you do prefer to eat your fish right off the bone, no worries. We scale and gut fish too! Whatever way you want to prepare them, we will happily clean them for you.

We provide a custom hand-tied porgy rig with mustad hooks. Our high-low rigs have two hooks so you can catch two fish at the same time! When the porgy bite is on, sometimes it is more rare to catch one fish than two. The New York State limit of for porgy/Scup is 30 per person per day. This seems like a large number, but when catching them two at a time, sometimes we catch our limit in just an hour! If you don't have a need to fill your freezer, the Osprey happily supports catch and release of all fish.

To catch a porgy, you use clam as bait. This is cut up by our mates and handed to you in a bucket. Make sure you bring a rag with you to wipe your hands after you bait the hook. If this seems like something you are not interested in touching, rest assured our mates will bait your hooks for you! If you forget your rag at home, please ask one of the crew to get you a rinse pail for your hands.

Although we are primarly targeting porgies on this trip, we do catch lots of other speicies: FLUKE, SEA BASS, STRIPPED BASS, BLUE FISH..... we catch almost anything that swims! As long as it is in season, you can keep it.
